Culture was being born -- Patti Astor’s Fun Gallery dismantled art-world gatekeeping bringing graffiti
artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Rammellzee into the spotlight; the Goode Brothers’ Area nightclub,
reinvented nightlife as immersive installation art; and the abandoned West Side piers, taken over by radical
artists including David Wojnarowicz, created site-specific works fusing sexuality, survival, and protest.
